AC Milan’s decline in the last decade has been as painful to watch for neutral fans as their own.
Long gone are the heydays of Kaka, Clarence Seedorf, Andrea Pirlo and Paolo Maldini and years of mediocrity have inevitably followed.
They haven’t played Champions League football since 2014 and they haven’t even remotely had a sniff of the Serie A title since 2012.
But that could all be about to change.
After a Chinese-based mega-money takeover earlier this year, the Italian giants have brought in Franck Kessie, Ricardo Rodriguez, Mateo Musacchio, Andre Silva and, er, Fabio Borini.
But arguably the biggest signing of the lot is moving closer and closer to a conclusion.
According to various reports, Bayer Leverkusen and Turkey star Hakan Calhanoglu is on his way to Milan to complete a medical ahead of a deal that could eventually cost €24m.
The 23-year-old attacking midfielder is widely regarded as the finest free-kick taker in world football, meaning he should provide entertainment aplenty upon his arrival.
Calhanoglu hasn’t played competitively since January after FIFA enforced a ban following a contract dispute with former club Trabzonspor.
“I am on my way to sign the contract in Milan,” he told Bild.
“I want to thank Bayer Leverkusen, the directors and the fans for three fantastic years.”
Calhanoglu has recorded a combined 50 goals and assists in 111 Bundesliga appearances for Leverkusen and Hamburg.
If he can deliver and gel with the other new boys, the good times could well be on their way back for Milan.
