Pep Guardiola is trying to pull off an audacious move for Barcelona veteran Andres Iniesta.
The 33-year-old has another year left on his contract and has been made an offer to extend his stay at the Nou Camp under new boss Ernesto Valverde.
Injuries and squad rotation restricted Iniesta to just 13 La Liga starts last season, but Guardiola, according to Calciomercato, is keen to tap into his experience at the Etihad next season.
The pair enjoyed a great relationship during their four years together in Catalonia, winning three La Liga titles, two Champions League and two Fifa Club World Cups.
Guardiola has already made contact with his former skipper about a switch to England to help be part of the City revolution.
The Spaniard is also being chased by Inter Milan, but Pep will hope his special relationship with Iniesta will be a deciding factor.
Guardiola has had a mixed summer so far in his attempts to reshape his squad ahead of the new season.
City pipped neighbours Manchester United for Monaco playmaker Bernardo Silva and landed Benfica keeper Ederson.
However, they have not been able to push through a deal for Monaco defender Benjamin Mendy and they could have a fight on their hands to sign Spurs full-back Kyle Walker, who is also wanted by Bayern Munich.
