Forget all the last-minute craziness that is becoming one of the most engrossing season’s in Championship history.
We’re here to talk about a young Welshman who is thriving under the guidance of an English national treasure.
Frank Lampard unleashed 21-year-old Harry Wilson on the Championship this season and the results have been devastating.
Playing anywhere across Derby’s exciting three in midfield Wilson has been running a one-man goal of the season tournament since he opened his account with a tap-in against Brentford in September.
And when I say tap-in, I mean that he started and finished a beautifully flowing counter-attack which started from a Brentford corner, had a bit of Wilson brilliance in midfield and then the Liverpool loanee tapped home.
That was just the beginning.
As you can see Wilson has become a bit of a specialist at the old wonderstrike.
In fact, Wilson has scored more league goals from outside the box (6) than a certain Lionel Messi this season.
Despite the Christmas leftovers still being warm, Wilson has pretty much already wrapped up the award for goal of the season.
But which one should he get it for?
Against Sheffield United yesterday Wilson lined up a free-kick in a perfect position just outside the box on the right.
He stepped up and deployed a rocket that nestled in the top left corner of the net with the keeper rooted to the spot and everyone else watching on in awe.
And while free-kicks have become Wilson’s speciality – he scored absolute stunners against Man United in the cup and against Ireland on international duty – the clip proves Wilson can make the ball do just about anything he wants with that left foot.
The volley against Sheffield Wednesday underlined his pure technical skills.
Lampard has brought together a band of merry youngsters that are becoming one of the most exciting teams in the Championship.
They’re up to sixth in the table and if Wilson keeps doing what he does best then Derby are well in with a chance of making the play-offs.
And this question is still so valid – will Wilson ever score a normal goal?
As for the goal of the season award, Wilson’s completed it.
More good news for Liverpool.
