Scientists accidentally identify Riyad Mahrez’s penalty as new 10th planet

The Man City star's spot-kick is still rising

Scientists mistakenly thought they had discovered a new planet on Sunday night – only to later realise it was just Riyad Mahrez’s penalty.

Astrologists across the world came together last night to claim that there was in fact a 10th planet in our solar system.

Mahrez blazed his penalty over the bar against Liverpool after Pep Guardiola chose him over Gabriel Jesus to take the crunch spot kick.

Supporters thought nothing of it as the ball flew out of Anfield after Mahrez put all the power in his left foot behind it.

However, what they didn’t realise is that this one really did keep rising.

It continued past the Ozone layer and Nike’s ultra-resilient materials kept the ball intact as it flew all the way into the solar system.

The science community were in raptures as they thought a 10th planet had been spotted.

But unofficial Hubble boffin Lee Satchell had to break the bad news to the science community after he recognised the Nike Swoosh.

“I was watching the game from the International Space Centre and at first I was fuming Pep had left Leroy Sane out of the team because it ruined my Dream Team,” Satchell said.

“After Mahrez missed that penalty all the Egyptian lads up here were giving me so much stick, but I saw on the cameras the ball had risen out of the stadium.

“It was only after we got contact from NASA that someone had discovered a new planet did I take a closer inspection to see the luminous Premier League ball floating about near Neptune.

“I had to be the bearer of bad news and tell everyone back on earth it was only Mahrez’s penalty.”
