Back once again for the renegade (pass)master.
Jorginho doesn’t half love a pass. The Chelsea midfielder set a Premier League record after attempting 180 passes against West Ham.
That’s one every 30 seconds. For 90 minutes. Just thinking about that makes us tired.
Spare a thought for anyone who passed teams to death before the 2003/04 season, as the data wasn’t collected back then.
Jorginho attempted 94 passes than any of his team-mates, with centre-back Antonio Rudiger trying 86.
West Ham’s starting midfield trio of Declan Rice, Mark Noble and Pedro Obiang managed 80 between them.
For those of you wondering, 162 of the midfielder’s passes found their intended destination.
Jorginho touched the ball 191 times, which is another record for the Premier League since records began.
N’Golo Kante, his midfield partner, touched the ball 63 times. Maurizio Sarri smoked a 40-deck in the same period.
But the cynics amongst you won’t be impressed.
After all, Jorginho’s record-breaking performance didn’t help his side win. Chelsea were frustrated by The Hammers’ low block and couldn’t find a way to break the deadlock.
Jorginho’s position at the base of Chelsea’ midfield has led to a change in role for Kante.
The Frenchman, who scored on the opening day of the season, is now playing further forward in a midfield trio.
Chelsea fans can’t have too many complaints, given they’re unbeaten in the Premier League under Sarri.
But with Liverpool up next in both the League Cup and Premier League, ‘Sarriball’ is about to be put to the test.
Prepare for a nicotine drought in south-west London.
