It’s been two years since Ajax youngster Abdelhak ‘Appie’ Nouri collapsed on the pitch during a pre-season friendly against Werder Bremen.
It left the Dutch under-19 star with severe and permanent brain damage, meaning he won’t be able to play football again.
But it seems his former teammates haven’t forgotten him, with a number of them honouring his memory by choosing 34 as their squad number this season.
New Roma signing Justin Kluivert and Man City youngster Philippe Sandler – who both came through the youth academy at Ajax with Nouri – as well as Napoli’s Amin Younes, have opted for the number 34 this season, having all played alongside him during their time at Ajax.
A few other ex-Ajax player have done the same, including Reda Boultam and Terry Lartey Sanniez.
Kluivert, who joined Roma from Ajax over the summer in a £17.25 million deal, posted a video on social media explaining his choice of shirt number, saying: “Why 34? It’s Appie’s number. My prayers and shirt number for you, my friend-brother who taught me so much.”
Barcelona forward Ousmane Dembele will also honour him by having “Nouri 34” printed on his boots this season.
Although Dembele has never been teammates with Nouri, the two seemingly knew each other through international youth tournaments, with them both being the same age.
