England have clearly been working on their kick-off strategy in training

England had eight players around the ball when the started the game against Nigeria

We didn’t have to wait long to find out what England have been working on in training this week.

England took on Nigeria at Wembley and while the Super Eagles might have won the clash of the kits, it was Gareth Southgate’s side who struck first in the tactical battle.

Southgate instructed no fewer than eight outfield players to stand on the half-way line, leaving just Kyle Walker and John Stones at the back.

Dele Alli set the ball back to Stones, who hit a raking pass forward.

Did it work?

Not quite. Nigeria’s Joel Obi beat Harry Kane in the air to give England a throw in.

But there was no harm in trying.

It took just seven minutes for Gary Cahill to head Kieran Trippier’s corner past Francis Uzoho.

But if you thought that England’s unorthodox kick-off was slightly loco, just wait until you see what time Ireland’s game with USA starts.

For reasons still not completely clear, Ireland’s game kicks off at 20:08.

International friendlies, hey. You’ve got to love them.
