Zinedine Zidane’s Real Madrid exit may have huge impact on Gareth Bale’s future

While the new manager also has to sort out the Cristiano Ronaldo situation, and decide whether to replace Karim Benzema and Keylor Navas

ZINEDINE ZIDANE’S shock departure from Real Madrid has sent shockwaves through the football world.

But while Los Blancos fans come to terms with his sudden resignation, what does the future lie for some of Madrid’s current crop of stars?

Here are five things the new boss must sort out at the Bernabeu upon his arrival…

Gareth Bale

The 28-year-old was often frozen out of the Real starting XI this season under Zidane – appearing in just 26 La Liga matches.

And after being dropped to the bench for the Champions League final against Liverpool, the Welsh winger hinted he could leave the club.

He has been strongly linked with a move back to the Premier League with Manchester United reportedly leading the race to sign him.

However, Red Devils boss Jose Mourinho has urged the club not to blow their £200m transfer budget on the ex-Tottenham ace.

Despite Bale falling out of favour with Zidane, he still managed to chip in with 21 goals and eight assists in all competitions, including a brace against the Reds in Kiev.

And with Zidane now stepping down as Madrid boss, Bale’s future at Real now looks as bright as ever.

Like Bale, Ronaldo hinted he could be on the move in the summer in the aftermath of the victory against Liverpool.

The 33-year-old feels let down from the club according to his friend Nuno Gomes, as his contract saga rumbles on.

It isn’t the first time the ex-Manchester United star has threatened to quit – with Madrid even hinting Ronaldo could be on his way out on their website.

And according to recent reports, Ronaldo has lost the dressing room with his team-mates allegedly turning on the Portuguese international.

Despite entering the twilight of his career, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner remains the linchpin of his side – as he topped the scoring charts yet again with 44 goals in as many games.

Karim Benzema

Despite starting and scoring against Jurgen Klopp’s men on Saturday, Benzema endured his most frustrating season in front of goal.

He managed a measly 12 strikes in 47 games – with just five goals coming in La Liga.

It’s the first time the 30-year-old has failed to hit double figures in the Spanish top-flight since his debut campaign in the 2009/10 season.

And with speculation linking Robert Lewandowski away from Bayern Munich, Real could be ready to snap up the Polish hitman.

The ex-Borussia Dortmund striker has banged in 40 plus goals in each of the last three seasons, and could slot seamlessly into the Madrid line-up.

Keylor Navas

It’s been three years since Iker Casillas left to join Porto, and still Real haven’t signed a world class replacement.

Navas –  a starter in three Champions League finals – may boast an exquisite trophy cabinet, but his performances continue to raise eyebrows.

Despite being a fine shot-stopper, the Costa Rican international always has a mistake in his locker – almost costing Real a place in the semi-finals after his calamitous gaffe against Juventus.

A move for David De Gea continues to remain in the pipeline, while Real are also reportedly keen on landing Chelsea’s Thibaut Courtois.

Ageing stars

The new manager must also look to future when replacing a number of ageing stars in the squad.

The likes of Sergio Ramos, Marcelo, Luka Modric along with Ronaldo and Benzema are all in their thirties.

Investment is needed to ensure the squad contains youthful players to go alongside Marco Asensio, Dani Ceballos and Acraf Hakimi.
