MANCHESTER UNITED boss Jose Mourinho appears ready to gazump Liverpool in the race to sign Real Madrid star Lucas Vazquez.
Premier League sides are readying themselves for a big-money summer bid, but United are said to be leading the race, despite the Reds’ strong interest.
Reports in Spain suggest Mourinho is keen to bring Vazquez’s impressive defensive abilities from his attacking wing role to Old Trafford.
The Special One has also been left thoroughly underwhelmed by his attacking options of late, relying heavily on Romelu Lukaku.
Following last week’s 1-0 loss to Brighton, Mourinho slated Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial for their sub-par form.
However, should a Premier League move materialise, Vazquez may need to be dragged kicking and screaming.
In March, the Spaniard revealed: “My dream has always been to play for Real Madrid.
“When they proposed [the return] to me it was like seeing a lifetime’s work rewarded.
“I am very happy at Real Madrid, it is the team that formed me as a player and I hope I can stay for many years.”
Vazquez, 26, has been at Real since 2007 and has gone on to make 134 appearances in all competitions, scoring 16 times – to go with six Spain caps.
