When you’ve runaway with the league, the last day of the aseason is supposed to be a celebration of your promotion.
Especially when you are guaranteed first place, have been far better than the competition and have beaten every team below you this season – except one.
Step forward Sunderland.
Wolves visited the Stadium of Light today expecting a cakewalk as they took on the League One-bound Mackems.
That’s the managerless worst team in the division, who are guaranteed to come bottom and are already relegated.
This is the kind of result the bookies love.
With every man and his dog expecting Wolves to run riot up north the game played out in almost ironic fashion.
The week after Sunderland was finally sold by Ellis Short and Chris Coleman was relieved of his duties, they pull out by far their best performance of the season.
Midway through the first half Ovie Ejaria gave the Black Cats the lead to the shock of pretty much everyone in the stadium.
20 minutes later Ashley Fletcher was on hand to Sunderland’s second and give Wolves a real shock.
And then if anyone could still believe their eyes Patrick Mcnair added a third in the second half.
Let’s say the Wolves players’ minds might have already been turned towards where they are going on their summer holidays and how they are going to take on the big boys in the Premier League next year.
But the result meant Sunderland can hold onto at least one positive from this season.
Sunderland frustrated Wolves to a draw at Molineaux back in December and after winnign this one, it means the Black Cats are the ONLY side in the Championship that Wolves haven’t beaten this season.
Sadly these performances were too much of a rare occasion to stave off a rather inevitable relegation.
But don’t worry Mackems. you can tell Accrington Stanley about the time you beat Champions Wolves in the 2018/18 season.
