Stoke have officially won the race – so to speak – to be the first Premier League side relegated this season.
A pretty dismal 2-1 defeat to Crystal Palace on Saturday lunchtime sealed their fate.
But in truth it’s been a long time coming.
Paul Lambert’s appointment in January initially inspired a 2-0 win over Huddersfield and their prospects looked good.
But since then Stoke have failed to win and failed to score more than once in any of their league games.
And a defeat today confirmed they can’t over take their nearest rivals.
Stoke took the lead through a brilliant free kick from Xherdan Shaqiri, but second-half goals from James McArthur and Patrick van Aanholt condemned them to another defeat.
Strangely enough, the Potters managed to get relegated before any other club this campaign despite not sitting bottom of the table.
West Brom will join them if they don’t beat Tottenham later on…
