And Boateng, 29, admits he could leave Bundesliga champions Bayern.

He told Socrates magazine: “I’ve experienced everything at Bayern, and I am slowly coming to a point where I must answer myself certain questions.

“What are the goals I have not reached yet? Do I, time and time again, want to prove myself at the same club with the same pre-conditions?’

“Those are not necessarily classic questions regarding the career, but vital questions and, in the end, questions that drive people.”

Boateng is racing to be fit for this summer’s World Cup after injuring his thigh against Real Madrid on Wednesday.

Bayern confirmed the centre-back had suffered a “structural injury in the adductor muscle of his left thigh”, which could rule him out for up to six weeks.

Boateng wrote on Instagram: “Life is full of setbacks.

“Now it’s time to fight to be in Russia. I will give everything for that.”

Boateng began his career at Hertha Berlin and played for Hamburg and Manchester City before signing for Bayern in 2011.

He has won six Bundesliga titles, three German Cups and the Champions League with the Bavarians.
