Man United are officially out of the Champions League.
Nobody thought we’d be saying that after the last 16 draw was made in December and Sevilla’s name was produced.
But that’s the reality – and their fans are holding one man and one man only responsible.
United were really impressive in their 2-1 win over Liverpool on Saturday, with Marcus Rashford brilliant in his match-winning two-goal performance.
Rashford had Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dejan Lovren on toast every time he faced them from the United left.
So when the United youngster started from the right against Sevilla, with Alexis Sanchez on the left instead, more than a few eyebrows were raised.
Unsurprisingly Rashford was nowhere near as effective and Sanchez continuously gave the ball away to the irk of the Old Trafford faithful.
In fact, the Manchester giants were truly awful and completely deserved to bow out.
And United fans on social media’s despair intensified when substitute Wissam Ben Yedder – as we predicted earlier – struck a dagger to their hearts with two late goals.
Many simply asked… why the hell change a winning formula that worked so well against Liverpool at the weekend?
Mourinho quickly became public enemy number one:
Louis van Gaal had to win the FA Cup to save his United job a few seasons ago, so will Mourinho have to do the same with no other silverware on the line?
