Attacker is being tracked after impressive displays in the Bundesliga but admits he has a clear favourite if it is a straight fight between the North West rivals

TIMO WERNER says he would pick Manchester United ahead of Liverpool if it came down to a straight fight between the clubs for his signature.

RB Leipzig star Werner, 22, is one of the hottest properties in the Bundesliga with a host of big clubs across Europe showing interest.

Tottenham and Arsenal have also had scouts at matches this season to monitor the progress of the attacker.

But the forward, who has scored 16 goals in all competitions for Leipzig this season, has admitted it is North West rivals United and Liverpool who catch his eye.

Werner says he would love the chance to test himself in the Premier League, but that Old Trafford would be his preferred destination ahead of Anfield.

Timo Werner says he would choose Manchester United over Liverpool

Speaking to Four Four Two, he said: “Playing in the Premier League is a dream for me.

“I would like to play for two or three clubs, and Manchester United are one of those clubs.

“But probably not in the next few years – later, when my English is a little bit better! I’m very comfortable at RB Leipzig, though.

“Manchester United and Liverpool were the teams I watched quite a lot in England.

“They were the two that I’m a little bit a fan of, because they have so much history. When Alex Ferguson was the coach, United won everything and were outstanding.

“In Liverpool it’s also their stadium and the atmosphere. But, when I have to decide, I’m more Manchester United than Liverpool.

Timo Werner is hoping to make his mark at the World Cup with Germany this summer

“I’m now at a point where at some stage in the future I’d like to play in a team that wins titles.”

Werner’s existing deal with RB Leipzig runs until 2020 – but by that time he would be old enough to leave the club on a free transfer if he ran his contract down.

The club would want at least £50million before they considered selling the Germany international.
