Jose Mourinho sees the highly-rated Serbian as a potential replacement for Paul Pogba but Pep Guardiola is also keen

MANCHESTER UNITED are set to lock horns with their fierce city rivals in the race to sign Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.

The Lazio ace, 22, has emerged as one of the leading attacking midfielders on the market after bursting onto the scene last season.

Milinkovic-Savic, 22, is a 6ft 3in midfielder who fits the Special One’s team profile perfectly.

And he could potentially partner compatriot Nemanja Matic in the middle.

Although whether this would mean a forward move for Paul Pogba is unknown with the French midfielder’s future at Old Trafford looking somewhat uncertain.

And now the Daily Record are reporting that Manchester City would also enter into the negotiations for one of the brightest talents in European football.

Milinkovic-Savic sparked rumours he was close to joining Juventus in this transfer window, after posting a picture of himself in Turin on his Instagram page.

However, he was in the city to visit his brother Vanja, who plays for Torino.

But the player himself appears to feel settled at Lazio, meaning it could perhaps only be a huge deal that would tempt him to move.

Milinkovic-Savic told Novosti: “I am focused only on Lazio. This season, Serie A has improved significantly, as you can see by the fact all the clubs are still in the Champions League or Europa League.

“As a club, we have a clear goal of a top four position, because that gives qualification to the Champions League from next season. That is a really big challenge.
