Forget Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino or Jurgen Klopp, the Reds success in Europe is all down to one man.

Step forward James Milner.

The very average utility man has been the key to putting a lot of those goals on a plate for the strikers to tap in.

Milner leads the charts for the most assists in the Champions League proper this season with six – two more than any other player.

The top three is made up of all Premier League players with Dele Alli and Kevin De Bruyne tied on four.

But king of banter Jordan Henderson has revealed that the normally reserved Milner won’t stop boasting to his team mates that he is currently the top assist maker in Europe.

“He has told a few of us that over the last couple of hours to be fair,” the Liverpool captain told Liverpoolfc.com.

“He is a fantastic player. It doesn’t really matter how old he is, he is as fit as anyone and you can see that on the pitch in how much he contributes to the team.

“He was brilliant again at Porto. He’s got a lot of assists in the Champions League, so hopefully he can continue it.”

It brings a smile to our face that the man who has a Twitter account named ‘Boring James Milner’ in his honour is actually giving stick to his far more glamorous team mates (Henderson not included).

We are sure he is probably celebrating the achievement with a lovely Ploughman’s sandwich and a shandy.

But don’t let this fool you into thinking he could be a good shout for the World Cup.
