Pep Guardiola will promote Man City youngsters to the first-team after missing out on Riyad Mahrez

The Premier League leaders failure to secure Mahrez is good news for the likes Lukas Nmecha

It looks like Manchester City’s failure to sign Riyad Mahrez this month is good news for the likes of Lukas Nmecha, Phil Foden, Brahim Diaz and Tosin Adarabioyo.

The Premier League leaders failed to snap up Mahrez after Leicester rejected their numerous attempts to sign him on the final day of the January transfer window.

It seems the former Premier League champions wanted around £95million for their star man, which is a little steep for someone City only really wanted as a quick replacement for the injured Leroy Sane and Gabriel Jesus.

Still, this is good news for City’s youngsters, who look likely to gain a place in the first-team squad as a result.

Speaking after their win over West Brom on Wednesday, Pep Guardiola confirmed that academy player Lukas Nmecha will train with the first-team.

The 19-year-old made his debut for City in their Carabao Cup quarter-final win over Leicester back in December – scoring a penalty in the shootout.

Guardiola said: “We have just three strikers plus Brahim Diaz and Lukas Nmecha.

“From now on Lukas will train with us for the season. It is not enough but Gabriel is coming back soon – I don’t know when exactly.”

Gabriel Jesus’ nasty knee injury on New Year’s Eve prompted City’s pursuit of Alexis Sanchez in early days of January, but he eventually moved to their bitter rivals United.

And Sane’s injury at the weekend has only added to their problems, while Kevin De Bruyne and Diaz both suffered brutal challenges in their win over the Baggies.

17-year-old England starlet Foden is also currently out with an ankle ligament injury.
