Olivier Giroud bid an emotional farewell to Arsenal’s fans this evening, as he played in the final 15 minutes of the Gunners 3-1 defeat to Swansea.
The Frenchman – who’s heavily linked with a move to London rivals Chelsea before the January transfer deadline is up on Wednesday – could be seen heading over to the travelling fans at full-time, in what was almost certainly a final goodbye.
The 31-year-old, who was a surprise inclusion in the Gunners matchday squad this evening, was well-received by the away fans, who could be heard chanting his name as he warmed up on the touchline ahead of his 76th minute cameo.
Giroud’s imminent departure is part of a curious transfer circus that includes Arsenal’s certain-capture of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Dortmund, with Chelsea’s Michy Batshuayi heading to the German giants as a replacement.
It also concludes a fairly hectic month for the Gunners, who saw Alexis Sanchez leave the club for Manchester United in a swap deal with Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
The Armenian midfielder was on the bench for his new club tonight, and made his debut around the hour mark.
Unfortunately, the Gunners conceded an awful goal to Swansea mere moments after he came on, with goalkeeper Petr Cech making a right mess of a simple clearance.
Weird month all ’round, eh?
