Having crashed out of the FA Cup at the weekend against mighty Nottingham Forest, the Carabao Cup is now pretty much Arsenal’s only realistic chance of silverware this season.
Up against Premier League champions Chelsea this evening, the Gunners will be keen to signal their intent in the first-leg at Stamford Bridge, before heading to the Emirates in a fortnight’s time.
So you definitely want your best players starting this one, right?
Well, no, apparently.
As Arsenal revealed their starting line-up for this evening’s game, there was one very obvious absentee from the match day XI.
He’s pretty muscley, he’s Chilean, he keeps his hair cut neat…
Yep, Alexis Sanchez is starting on the bench.
It’s not really surprising, considering the speculation surrounding the Chilean’s future in north London, with the player expected to complete a move to Manchester City in the next week or so.
In his place then is Danny Welbeck, who has been handed the responsibility of leading the line against Antonio Conte’s Blues tonight, alongside Alexandre Lacazette.
Alex Iwobi is also in the starting line-up, despite being caught partying in the early hours in London ahead of Arsenal’s 4-2 defeat by Forest in the third-round FA Cup clash on Sunday.
Still, it’s not all doom and gloom, Arsenal fans.
A certain a club hero will be captain tonight, and he’s more than willing to fight tooth and nail to win a trophy with the Gunners this season.
