There will be tantrums in the Ronaldo household tonight.
Cristiano Ronaldo has had an amazing year with Real Madrid as they became champions of Spain, Europe and the world.
On a personal note he also scooped the Ballon d’Or and the FIFA Best award.
And yet still he was beaten by Messi for La Liga’s top individual accolade.
The self-professed ‘best player in the world’ will not be happy to lose this one.
Messi was awarded the Alfredo Di Stefano trophy which is given to the best footballer in La Liga for the fifth time.
A lot of people will agree that Messi is a naturally better player, but Ronaldo was instrumental in Real Madrid winning the league last term.
With this win Messi now overtakes Ronaldo as the player to have won the gong the most times.
Ronny will have to settle for his four.
- John Terry says Chelsea from 2006 would’ve beaten Pep Guardiola’s Man City side
- Paulinho is the most dangerous midfielder in La Liga this season
- Cristiano Ronaldo’s arrogance is what makes him great but it’s also tarnishing his legacy
To make things worse for the megastar the award is handed out by Marca, a traditionally Madrid-friendly newspaper.
To be fair to Messi he had another stellar season last year as he banged in 37 goals in 34 games and walked away with the Spanish golden boot.
Just to rub salt into the wounds Messi posed with the Pichichi and Alfredo Di Stefano trophies for pictures.
Could this season be Ronaldo’s last chance to win dominate La Liga?
It didn’t start well with just two goals in his first 14 league games.
A brace against Sevilla got on him on the score sheet again but he will have to go a long way to catch Messi who already has 14 in 16.
Hard luck, Ronny.
