Jeremy Mathieu forgets he no longer plays for Barcelona after scoring stunning own goal

The former Barca defender - who now turns out for Sporting - put the ball past his own goalkeeper in the Champions League

In a group with both Barcelona and Juventus, it was always going to be tough to make it through to the last 16.

In this evening’s trip to the Nou Camp, Sporting needed to beat Barca and hope Juve lost out to Olympiacos – a situation Mathieu must’ve surely been relishing AND dreading.

Lucky for him, Lionel Messi, Paulinho and Sergio Busquets were all starting on the bench tonight, but they still managed to break the deadlock – scoring through Paco Alcacer on the hour-mark.

With game winding down to full-time, Barca sent the ball into the box for one last attack.

And in a moment of madness, it was Mathieu who put the ball past goalkeeper Rui Patricio.

Take a look.

Honestly, you couldn’t script it.

And as you’d expect, Twitter saw the funny side.

Sigh.

We’re sure he didn’t mean to do that, right?
