It’s the biggest game of the South American club football calendar.
So for the players involved in the Copa Libertadores final last night, just keep your head, keep it simple and hope to avoid any costly errors, right?
If only that was the case for poor Lanus defender Jose Luis Gomez.
With the score at 0-0, Gomez inexplicably lost control of the ball on the halfway line, allowing Gremio player Fernandinho to break and score.
Lanus went on to lose 2-1 on the night and 3-1 on aggregate – and Gomez, at the age of just 24, is now astonishingly considering calling his career quits as a result.
He told TyC Sports: “I’m thinking of leaving football.
“I’m hurt, I feel bad. This was a mistake that I did not have to make.
“I’ll think about it, I’m a boy, but this does not have to happen. I feel guilty.
“I did not have a good night, I want to apologise to all the fans of Lanus, fans who deserved to be champions, but because of a mistake of mine the game was opened up.”
Gomez has been capped once by Argentina – but at this rate that might be the end of his international career.
We hope he’s just got caught up in the emotion.
