What do you have in common with Benevento’s players?
You’re all still waiting for your first Serie A points of the season.
Yep, 13 games into the 2017/18 campaign Benevento still haven’t picked up a single point.
Thirteen games. Thirteen losses. Six goals scored. Thirty-three goals conceded.
They are the type of numbers than will make Roy Hodgson feel like his Crystal Palace players couldn’t be in better form.
To put their campaign into context, Napoli already have a 35 point advantage over Benevento with 25 games still to be played.
MORE FROM AROUND EUROPE:
- Francesco Totti once single-handedly destroyed Lazio’s galacticos
- Remember when Serie A had all the world’s best defenders?
Verona, who themselves have only won once this season, are six points ahead in 19th.
A 94th minute goal saw Benevento lose to Sassuolo and break Man United’s 87-year record for consecutive losses at the start of a season.
Not an ideal way to start your first ever season in Italy’s top flight.
Newcastle United fans will be pleased to know that they’ve had a special part to play in this historical run.
Moroccan defender Achraf Lazaar, who is on loan from Newcastle and played in the EFL Cup earlier in the season, has featured in nine of Benevento’s losses this season.
The rest of the squad is made up of Italian journeymen and loanees, with 12 of the squad only at the club on a temporary basis.
So is there any hope?
Given Verona, Genoa, SPAL, Sassuolo, Crotone and Udinese haven’t exactly had sparkling starts to the season either, Benevento could yet drag their way towards safety.
And if you take Leicester City’s blueprint then Benevento are well on the way to winning Serie A in 2019.
