We’re going to cut the waffle.
This is the best/worst miss you’re going to see today. The worst miss you’ll see this week. The worst miss you’ll see this month.
In fact, we’d be pretty shocked if you saw a worse miss all year.
The setting was Cardiff v Brentford.
Cardiff, in true Neil Warnock fashion, attempted to play out from the back.
Except they made a bit of a mess of it.
Brentford were through on Neil Etheridge’s goal.
Ollie Watkins did his part, playing a simple pass to leave Neal Maupay facing an open net.
And when we say open net, we mean glaringly open, begging for the ball.
So what did Maupay do next? Roll the ball into the open net?
Nope. He’s a maverick.
He waited for Sol Bamba to get back on the line and then, as a maverick would do, tried to score in the only bit of the goal the defender was blocking.
And then it happened.
He missed. Just like that. Not even blocked on the line. No shot on target for the stats. An actual miss.
Neal Maupay, welcome to years of being on those DVDs they only sell at Christmas. Richly deserved.
