Even Messi’s countrymen are angry with how good he is.
Former Football Italia icon and Argentina striker Gabriel Batistuta is peeved that he can no longer call himself Argentina’s top scorer. Fair enough.
Batistuta is rightly annoyed that Lionel Messi has taken away his Argentina goal-scoring record.
Since Messi overtook Batistuta in the scoring charts at last summer’s Copa America, the former Fiorentina player nicknamed ‘Batigol’ has had to change his chat up line.
But when you are up against such otherworldly talent sometimes you just cannot compete.
However, Batistuta has been pretty classy in conceding his defeat, saying Messi is out of this world.
Batigol told Argentine TV that Messi taking his goal-scoring record has got in his grill.
“Honestly [it annoyed me], not a little but a lot, yes. It was a title that I held. It’s not just any old thing,” he whined.
He’s right that being top scorer for your country is a huge achievement and not something to be happy about when you lose.
But when you’re up against possibly the best player your country, the world, the galaxy has ever seen it’s understandable.
“You go around the world and you say, ‘I’m the top scorer for the Argentina national team.’ I liked that.
“But the advantage I have is that I’m second to an extraterrestrial.”
Me-ssi, phone home.
