Kylian Mbappe was one of the world’s most sought-after players over the summer.
The teenager, who helped Monaco win the Ligue 1 title and reach the semi-final stage of the Champions League last season, was heavily linked with the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool and Real Madrid during the transfer window.
In the end, he headed to Monaco’s bitter rivals Paris Saint-Germain on a season-long loan, which will most likely result in a permanent – €180 million-rated – move next summer.
But according to the folks over at L’Equipe, the 18-year-old came very, very close to joining La Liga giants Barcelona instead.
L’Equipe 21 have even made a mini-documentary about the proposed move, titled ‘Kylian Mbappé – Hors normes (excepcional)’.
Take a look:
The short video explains that Barca reached a deal with Monaco as the transfer deadline loomed, with the deal including a substantial fee plus Arda Turan going the other way.
The Catalans were reportedly still smarting over PSG’s signing of Neymar and wanted to hijack their deal for Mbappe.
It seems everything was agreed and ready, with Mbappe’s plane waiting for him at the airport – before the deal broke down.
That’s that, then.
And it hasn’t worked out too badly for the youngster.
He’s seemingly loving life at PSG – linking up with Neymar and Edison Cavani to form one of football’s most-feared attacking trios.
The youngster has already notched four goals and four assists in the French top-flight this season, including two goals against Angers at the weekend.
The most exciting youngster around at the moment?
