As free agents go they don’t get much bigger than Cristiano Ronaldo.
Well come 2021 CR7 will be available for absolutely nothing. Nada. Rien.
Ronaldo has confirmed that he’s not looking to extend his current contract and won’t be signing a new deal at the Bernabeu.
The 32-year-old told beIN Sports: “I am doing very well at Real Madrid. I have four years left on my contract and I don’t want to renew. I am fine.”
So that’s that. About as black and white as you can get in the murky world of football transfers.
His stance comes in direct contrast to many of Madrid’s stars who have signed improved terms recently.
Ronaldo was clearly unhappy after Madrid’s 3-1 loss to Spurs in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
He’s had statistically his worst start to a La Liga season, scoring just once, but still has 12 goals in 16 appearances for club and country.
Not bad going.
So where will Ronaldo head when his contract expires?
Will he retire to Madeira to live the quiet life? Will he return to Old Trafford for an emotional swansong? Will the riches of the Chinese Super League prove too much?
We’ll find out in four years.
