There are moments that define football.
The Cruyff turn. The Hand of God. The Zidane roulette.
And, who can forget, the Phil Jones tackle.
Performed by tackling with your head rather than your foot, the Phil Jones tackle is now a vital part of any defending manual.
Even strikers are getting in on the act now.
During this weekend’s Derby Della Madonnina AC Milan striker Andre Silva executed the Phil Jones tackle to perfection.
The first stage is realising you’re in a position no defender should find themselves in.
This, inevitably, is followed by losing your footing.
The final part consists of putting all thoughts of safety aside and getting your head in a place it really shouldn’t be.
Unfortunately Silva’s bravery saw him give away a free kick, as he mistimed the Phil Jones tackle and brought down Roberto Gagliardini.
Then his opposite number, Mauro Icardi, inflicted further pain by scoring a winner in the 90th minute.
Unlucky Andre, practice makes perfect.
