When World Cup qualification is on the line, you have to bring out the big guns.
Venezuela manager Rafael Dudamel has praised his squad’s professionalism after they resisted temptation ahead of their final World Cup qualifier against Paraguay.
The 44-year-old gaffer claims that their opposition tried to distract his squad by sending ladies of the night to Venezuela’s hotel the night before the game.
“There were several female visits last night at the hotel,” Dudamel said.
“But soccer players have evolved. We are not surprised with these female visits and know who sent them. These are old tactics.”
Paraguay needed a win and other results to go their way if they were to sneak a play-off spot but it was not to be.
The hosts dominated the game at Estadio Defensores de Chaco in Asuncion but were frustrated by a resolute and focussed defence..
The visitors grabbed a late goal through Yangel Herrera to claim an unlikely victory.
The New York City FC midfielder – on loan from Manchester City – surged in with a late run into the box after a magnificent 50-yard dribble on the right flank from Romulo Otero.
Venezuela finished bottom of the group on just 12 points from 18 games, but they will take heart from their spirited display to finish.
