On the pitch Giorgio Chiellini is a warrior with a head of steel.
Off it he’s a gentleman with a heart of gold.
The Juventus defender emailed Juan Mata to sign up to his Common Goal project, in which players pledge 1% of their wage to charity.
It was an exchange that perfectly illustrated Chiellini’s humility and humbleness.
For a start he introduced himself as ‘Giorgio Chiellini, player of Juventus’ before going on to apologise for his English.
He also declared that he was ‘not interested in advertising’ and only wanted to ‘support a brilliant project’.
Chiellini is the latest player to join the Common Goal project, following in the footsteps of Mats Hummels and Alex Morgan.
In times of trouble and strife it’s touching to see a player actively trying to improve the world.
The drinks are on us next time you’re in town, Giorgio.
