The news that Fenerbahce were talking to Diego Costa’s representatives about a move came as little surprise to anyone who’d watched the 28-year-old’s saga unfold this summer.
So when Fenerbahce announced they’d reached an agreement to sign a Premier League striker, we barely batted an eyelid. But then we read the small print.
Fenerbahce have indeed reached an agreement to sign a Premier League striker. And he’s coming from London. But it’s not Costa, it’s Spurs’ Vincent Janssen.
A statement on Fenerbahce’s website stated that they’d come to an agreement with Spurs and that Janssen would arrive in Istanbul Ataturk Airport at 12.30 for further discussions.
Janssen will likely move to Turkey on a season-long loan with an option for a permanent transfer next summer.
He’ll link up with another Spurs flop, Roberto Soldado, who joined Fener from Villarreal in the summer.
The timing couldn’t be better for Fenerbahce who watched Janssen’s fellow Dutchman Robin van Persie succumb to a knee injury during the international break.
Janssen has struggled at Spurs following a £17million move from AZ in the summer of 2016, scoring just two Premier League goals last season.
His playing time was set to be even more limited this campaign following the signing of Fernando Llorente from Swansea on deadline day.
But his international strike rate of seven goals in 15 games highlights his ability, which Fenerbahce will hope to coax out.
So what now for Costa?
It’s unlikely that Fenerbahce will sign both Costa and Janssen, but with the Turkish window not closed until close of play today his options will remain open.
Besiktas have been heavily linked with a move which would see Costa join Pepe, Gary Medel and Ricardo Quaresma.
We’d pay to watch those fireworks in training, let alone the Istanbul derby.
