When you’ve had the seemingly everlasting career Gianluigi Buffon has had, naming a toughest opponent could prove quite the challenge.
Buffon has played across three decades after entering his 40th year on this planet in January and come up against some of the best players ever to grace the game for club and country.
The Italian great has come to face to face with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi regularly down the years, with both denying him his elusive Champions League winner’s medal in recent memory.
But Buffon snubbed both when discussing which striker has caused him the most problems, instead opting for the original Brazilian Ronaldo.
Buffon believes the former Real Madrid and Barcelona striker was the ‘perfect player’ and inspired generations of younger players to take up the game.
The 39-year-old told Marca: “The striker who caused me all kinds [of trouble] was Ronaldo, the Brazilian one.
“He was the perfect player, as he had power, speed, intuition technical skills and quickness. He was a jaw-dropping player.
“It seemed like he was created in a lab.”
Buffon will have witnessed Ronaldo’s wrath first hand frequently during the striker’s spells with Inter Milan in the late 90s and early 00s and then with arch rivals AC in 2007/08.
Now that’s a proper contest.
