Renato Sanches’ move to Bayern Munich was supposed to propel him to superstardom.
The bullish Portuguese midfielder beat many other talented youngsters to the Golden Boy award last year after helping Portugal win Euro 2016 and winning the double with Benfica.
However, due to Bayern’s surplus of midfield talent, Sanches’ playing time has been limited.
Now the Bundesliga giants are prepared to let the 19-year-old spend some time out on loan to hone his skills in competitive situations.
Naturally, many clubs are keen to offer a temporary home to Sanches but one Premier League club has emerged as a surprise possible destination.
Bookies have slashed the odds on Sanches joining Swansea on loan.
Prem big boys Liverpool and Chelsea are also in the mix but the Swans are currently second favourites to come to an arrangement with Bayern.
At first this sounds utterly ludicrous but there’s a logical explanation.
Swansea boss Paul Clement was assistant to Carlo Ancelotti at Bayern and has a good relationship with the Italian gaffer.
Gylfi Sigurdsson’s departure has left Clement in need of midfield talent and Sanches may well be the answer — albeit a temporary one.
Clement has already used his links with former employers to land Tammy Abraham on loan from Chelsea and the former Derby manager may repeat the trick with Bayern.
The German champions are prepared to let Sanches spend the whole season out on loan and would continue to pay a significant portion of his wages.
Sanches in a Swansea shirt… just imagine it.
