Lionel Messi yelled Spain’s most insulting phrase at Sergio Ramos during El Clasico

A frustrating night for Barcelona got the best of the Argentine superstar

Barcelona find themselves in a desperate situation.

On the eve of a new La Liga season they were once again comprehensively outplayed by Real Madrid as Los Blancos won the Spanish Super Cup with a 2-0 win at the Bernabeu to add to their 3-1 victory at the Nou Camp in the first leg.

21-year-old sensation Marco Asensio scored yet another world-class goal before Karim Benzema took advantage of some poor defending to double the lead before half-time.

Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi cut a despondent figure throughout the night as the Catalans’ Neymar-less attack failed to give Zinedine Zidane’s men many problems.

Frustrations boiled over for the Argentine No10 when Sergio Ramos failed to hand the ball over for a Barcelona free-kick.

Real Madrid’s skipper tossed the ball over Messi’s head prompting Barcelona’s captain to yell: “La Coucha de tu madre!”

Even non-Spanish speakers may be familiar with this phrase as it is a unpleasantly regular insult in Spain and among footballers in particular.

The direct translation is ‘the c**t of your mother’ and though it is a relatively common phrase that doesn’t make it any less vulgar.

Luka Modric was forced to apologise after directing the same insult at an official in 2016.

Ramos didn’t seem too bothered by the exchange — lifting a fourth trophy in three months does wonders for one’s mood.

The gulf in class highlighted Barcelona’s need for fresh talent.

The club have only recruited Paulinho from the Chinese Super League since Neymar’s world-record move to PSG.

If last night’s display is anything to go off, they need Philippe Coutinho, Ousmane Dembele and a couple of others on top of that.
