Manchester City’s quest for a completely new back-line continues, with the Citizen’s reportedly keen on signing former Man United centre-back Jonny Evans this summer.
City go into the new Premier League season relatively under-stocked in central defence, with the inconsistent John Stones and Nicolas Otamendi joined by their regularly-injured captain Vincent Kompany and the seldom seen Eliaquim Mangala.
Having spent shed-loads of money on trendy full-backs during the transfer window, it looks like manager Pep Guardiola has suddenly realised he needs to strengthen the central area of his side’s defence.
And if you believe the dubious ‘sources’ over at Sky, then Guardiola apparently sees West Brom’s Evans as a viable option.
But signing Evans could prove tricky for Guardiola, with the 29-year-old previously coming through the ranks at United before leaving for West Brom two years ago.
However, the defender has yet to commit to a new contract at The Hawthorns, despite reports claiming a deal was close earlier this summer.
City fans may scoff at these rumours, but there’s very few defender’s better than Evans playing for a club outside of the league’s ‘big six’ at the moment.
The tidy centre-back’s stock has risen considerably since swapping Old Trafford for the Hawthorns, especially after helping the Baggies finish last season in a respectable 10th place in the league table.
Guardiola has already forked out a considerable amount of cash this summer.
City made plenty of headlines last month when they spent a staggering £130million on three full-backs in only 10 days, making Benjamin Mendy and Kyle Walker two of the world’s most expensive defenders.
But having let go of Pablo Zabaleta, Gael Clichy, Bacary Sagna and Aleksandar Kolarov at the end of last season, strengthening the club’s back-line has been the priority this summer.
