Did Johan Cruyff predict Neymar’s departure from Barcelona back in 2013?

The Brazilian superstar looks all set to leave the Nou Camp for Paris Saint-Germain this summer

It looks like Neymar really is on his way to Paris Saint-Germain this summer.

The Brazilian hotshot is adamant that he’s had enough of living in the shadow of Lionel Messi at Barcelona and wants to be top dog somewhere new.

PSG are edging steadily closer to completing a stonking £198million deal for the Samba star, which will smash the previous transfer record of £89m set by Paul Pogba last summer.

The rumoured transfer has certainly sent shock-waves through the footballing world, with many fans and critics expressing disappointment that Neymar has chosen to join a club with mere ambition (and money), like PSG.

But it seems Neymar’s decision to leave Barca has been on the cards since his arrival back in 2013, at least according to former club legend Johan Cruyff.

Quoted in May 2013, the late Dutch hero said: “Messi and Neymar? I wouldn’t put two captains on the same ship. We have to learn from the past.”

It was common knowledge that Cruyff felt the side would struggle to have the competing brilliance of Messi and Neymar in the same team, and even suggested the La Liga giants shouldn’t have signed Neymar unless they planned to sell Messi.

He said: “You are talking about a team, its players, the things around it … There are too many things at stake. That’s why it’s so difficult to manage such a top class squad.”

Neymar and Messi will forever be remembered for their attacking partnership with Luis Suarez to form the fabled MSN attacking trio, widely considered the most fearsome frontline in the history of the game.

Alongside Messi and Suarez, Neymar has scored 105 goals in 186 games for the Spanish giants, as well as providing 80 assists in his four years at the club.
