We’re sure you’re getting bored about reading how expensive transfer fees are nowadays.
But, even by modern standards, the price Man United are reportedly willing to pay Chelsea for Nemanja Matic seems astronomical.
United will part with £40million for the Serbian midfielder, according to The Guardian.
That would make Matic United’s fourth most expensive signing, behind Paul Pogba, Angel Di Maria and Anthony Martial.
Now we’re by no means saying Matic isn’t a good player.
At his best the rangy left footer can both destroy and create- attributes which aren’t often found together in a player.
With two Premier League medals, an FA Cup and a Football League Cup he’s got plenty of experience in English football.
But £40mil, really?
At 28-years-old Matic is unlikely to have any significant sell-on fee when United decide to move him on further down the line.
Chelsea need to get rid of Matic to make room for the incoming Tiemoue Bakayoko, who’s set to arrive from Monaco, so United should’ve been able to get Matic for closer to the £21mil he arrived at Stamford Bridge for.
But what do we know? We’re not football managers.
We just miss the days when £40m would get you Luis Figo and Zinedine Zidane, rather than half a Paul Pogba.
