It’s been a whirlwind few months for Ajax winger David Neres.
The Brazilian winger moved from Sao Paulo to the Dutch giants in January, and played a big part in their end of season title push.
He even made an appearance in a major European final, coming on as a late substitute in Ajax’s 2-0 defeat to Manchester United in the Europa League final.
But despite the loss, the 20-year-old has spoken highly of the United players who consoled him and his defeated teammates at full-time, and even spoke of his delight when Wayne Rooney knew his name.
Recalling the moment to ESPN Brazil’s Futebol No Mundo show, Neres said: “Rooney knew my name. I couldn’t imagine that. At the end of the game, he greeted me and said my name. I couldn’t imagine.
“I was a bit upset because we lost the game. Then he came, greeted me, said my name, I even forgot the defeat. Pogba too, some of of Manchester players.”
It’s sometimes nice to remember that high-profile footballers can still get starstruck, and despite his advancing years and lack of game time last season, it still doesn’t get much bigger than Rooney.
