Manchester City have signed, or are in the processing of signing depending on the reports you read, a new goalkeeper this week.
Highly-rated Benfica shot-stopper Ederson is set to arrive in Manchester for £35m – a world record for a goalkeeper in pound sterling, surpassing the £33m Juventus forked out for Gianluigi Buffon way back in 2001.
Ederson arrives amid huge anticipation among City fans who will be hoping he can sufficiently replace Claudio Bravo after a torrid debut season in England for the Chilean.
But busy internet trolls may have landed the 23-year-old in trouble with his new boss, Pep Guardiola.
Ederson, pretty much this time last year, tweeted the following from his own Twitter account about the then Bayern Munich manager:
He deleted it – but the internet never forgets, does it?
Interestingly, the tweet was posted on May 21 2016 – the same day that Bayern beat Borussia Dortmund on penalties to win the German Cup in Guardiola’s last game in charge of the Bavarian giants.
The maverick Spaniard was a little disappointing in his first season with City, finishing third in the Premier League and trophyless, after years of domination with Barcelona and Bayern Munich.
There’s certainly the argument that Guardiola still has to prove his managerial credentials – something this season has undoubtedly illustrated – rather than simply inherit squads littered with world class talent.
So is that what Ederson was getting at with his ‘bald cheat’ remark?
The Brazil star is regarded as one of the finest in his position with his feet, which may point to why Guardiola was so keen to snap him up so quickly.
But if Pep is made aware of his social media activity it could make for a pretty awkward first training session…
