What would it have been like to see Zinedine Zidane and Luka Modric in the same midfield? Or Edgar Davids linking up with Paulo Dybala?
We’ll never know. Obviously. But we can let our imaginations wonder, with the help of some graphical wizadry.
Gonzalo Higuain- Juventus (1994/95)
The Argentinian slots into a front four of Gianluca Vialli, Alessandro Del Piero and Fabrizio Ravanelli, helping the Old Lady score a record total of Serie A goals.
It’s all made possible by a midfield of Antonio Conte and Didier Deschamps who prowl the half-way line chopping down any hint of a counter-attack.
Luka Modric- Real Madrid (1996/97)
How about this for a midfield three? Clarence Seedorf, Fernando Redondo and Luka Modric.
A bit of South American flair, Dutch technique and Balkan genius. Have fun defending against those three.
Cristiano Ronaldo- Real Madrid (1997/98)
Real Madrid finished a distant fourth during the 1997/98 season.
But, in our parallel nostalgic universe, the addition of Ronaldo, linking up with Raul and Davor Suker, blows everyone else out of the water.
Miralem Pjanic- Juventus (1998/99)
Who takes free-kicks for this side?
It’s a battle between Pjanic, Thierry Henry, Zidane, Davids, Paulo Montero and Del Piero. Either way, there’s not much point building a wall.
Isco- Real Madrid (1998/99)
This is the link up of two technical one name wonders.
Isco and Guti. Back heel assists galore. Just don’t expect too much defending.
Gareth Bale- Real Madrid (1998/99)
Madrid’s late Noughties left flank is a full-back’s nightmare.
If you manage to stop Bale you’ve got Roberto Carlos to worry about. Good luck with that.
Paulo Dybala- Juventus (1999/2000)
Dybala plays just behind Del Piero, who plays just behind Zidane, who plays just behind Filippo Inzaghi.
Sprinkle in a bit of Gianluca Zambrotta, Edwin van der Sar, Davids and Conte and you’ve got yourself a title winning side.
