Something very strange is happening in Italy.
Just when you think you’ve seen it all in football, it finds a way to warp your mind and make you question everything.
Let us explain…
The location of this conundrum is the historic city of Pisa.
AC Pisa are currently languishing at the bottom of the Italian football’s second tier, Serie B.
Most experienced football fans will assume that the club are there because they’ve been leaking goals and losing games.
Pisa have lost 13 of their 39 games, the same as fifth-placed Benevento.
And get this, they’ve conceded just 29 goals – which makes them the best defence in the whole league!
You may now think that the club have been slapped with a points deduction for some reason.
Well yes, four points to be exact but if you reverse all deductions and consider points earned from games only, they would move up just one place in the league and would still be facing relegation.
So what’s going on?
Pisa’s manager is none other than AC Milan legend Gennaro Gattuso.
The World Cup-winning Italian prioritised organisation, tackling and stopping goals as a player and not much has changed during his managerial years.
Gattuso’s troops have only scored 22 goals, averaging 0.56 goals per game.
In comparison, Sunderland at the foot of the Premier League are averaging 0.76 goals a game.
Needless to say this has led to some turgid games that even the most passionate fans have struggled to stay awake for.
Ten of their 20 draws have ended 0-0.
The whole situation is as mind-boggling as it is depressing, if you’re a Pisa fan that is.
Gattuso needs to get himself a decent attacking coach, pronto.
What’s Alessandro Del Piero up to these days?
