Arsene Wenger has today announced he will step down from Arsenal in the summer.
And frankly we’re all a bit emotional.
Wenger’s 22-year tenure had it’s ups and downs but his impact on English football cannot be underestimated.
To put that into some context, that’s a longer tenure than the rest of the other 19 Premier League managers combined.
So to commemorate a seminal day, we’ve managed to dig up the press coverage from 1996 surrounding Wenger’s unveiling.
Wenger’s appointment was famously drawn out, with a full two weeks passing between the announcement and his first appearance in the Gunners dug out.
Here are a few extracts:
1 September 17th 1996 – ‘Wengerless Wonders’
2 September 17th 1996 – ‘Ton of a Gunn’
3 23rd September 1996 – Guns ‘N Roses
4 24th September 1996 – ‘Play as I say or you lot will be Gonners’
Do you remember what you were doing in 1996?
