What’s this game about?
Red Dead Redemption 2 is the third instalment in the series and a prequel to 2010’s Red Dead Redemption.
The game is set in 1899, following the story of outlaw Arthur Morgan, a member of the Dutch Van der Linde gang.
Rockstar’s descriptor for the game gives a great overview of what we can expect:
“America, 1899. The end of the Wild West era has begun. After a robbery goes badly wrong in the western town of Blackwater, Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang are forced to flee.
With federal agents and the best bounty hunters in the nation massing on their heels, the gang must rob, steal and fight their way across the rugged heartland of America in order to survive.
As deepening internal divisions threaten to tear the gang apart, Arthur must make a choice between his own ideals and loyalty to the gang who raised him.”
A new perspective
It has been revealed that from the start of the game you will be able to play Red Dead Redemption 2 completely in first-person.
Rockstar introduced this option to GTA V a few years after it’s launch.
This will give you the opportunity to be far more accurate and immerse yourself in the rich world further.
The wildlife
Red Dead Redemption 2 has way more wildlife with over 200 different species of animals, birds and fish, all of whom react to the environment, NPC’s and you in different ways.
They form a constantly changing ecosystem with great plains, rivers and forests keeping players on their toes.
Hunting and fishing will be essential in the game, providing food, materials and a source of income.
Using the right bait and lure is important when catching different breeds of fish.
Hunting goes into even more detail, with a number of factors coming into play.
- Watch the wind direction or you will alert your prey
- Choice of weapon and shot placement are also important and will affect the quality of the meat and pelt, which in turn affects the price that traders will pay for them.
- You will have to pick the right gauge of rifle for the size of animal that you’re hunting
Your riding companion
With 19 different breeds of horses in the game, your choice will affect the way you play.
From Appaloosas and Arabians to Shires to Mustangs every horse handles differently with their own defined characteristics.
Horses can be captured and broken out in the wild, purchased from stables or acquired by more underhanded means.
You will have to keep your horse groomed and well-fed, which in turn will improve their stamina, performance and handling especially when getting into gunfights.
There are a whopping 59 different styles of coats, and a huge range of customizable tack, including saddles, horns, stirrups and spurs.
Meaning you can create your very own travelling companion the way you want.
A thief at heart
The brand new gameplay trailer has revealed all the different (not so honourable) ways you can make money and quest in the game.
Heists, are to play a bigger role in this game than in the last game, allowing you to rob trains, banks, coaches, stores, homes or just random people.
You and your gang are set to terrorise the countryside, however, get a bounty on your head and you will be hunted down by bounty hunters and killed… or worse taken in to see the sheriff alive.
Points of interest
A number of the towns, villages and cities have been revealed by Rockstar games ahead of the launch.
Here they are below:
Valentine, the Heartlands, NH – A raucous, rough-and-tumble town in the Heartlands, Valentine’s livestock auctions attract traders, ranchers, cowboys, gamblers, outlaws and prostitutes from far and wide, all looking to make some money, raise some hell, and have a good time.
Annesburg, Roanoke Ridge, NH – Life isn’t easy for the miners and their families in Annesburg, which has been providing coal up and down the Lannahechee River for almost a century. Working conditions are terrible for little pay, and many men have lost their lives down the pit.
Saint Denis, Bayou NWA, LE – A key gateway into North America with a trade route that runs the length of the country, the bustling city of Saint Denis is a melting pot of cultures and people where businessmen, socialites, sailors, laborers, beggars and thieves all live side by side.
Mount Hagen, Grizzlies, AM – One of the more well-known peaks in the snowy Grizzlies of Ambarino, Mount Hagen towers above Lake Isabella to the west and Beartooth Beck to the east, which provides the main pass through the western mountain range and joins up with the Dakota River further south.
Rhodes, Scarlett Meadows, LE – Prim and proper on the surface, tensions and corruption run deep in the Southern town of Rhodes, which for years has been caught in the crossfire between the Braithwaites and the Grays, two warring plantation families.
Strawberry, Big Valley, WE – Strawberry was little more than a small logging town until the arrival of its new mayor, an East Coast eccentric, who is obsessed with transforming it into a cultural beacon for wealthy tourists, much to the bemusement of the locals.
Lagras, Bayou NWA, LE – A small, remote settlement out in the swamps of Bayou Nwa, Lemoyne, the people of Lagras live self-sufficiently for the most part, making a little money here and there from fishing and acting as guides for travellers wishing to navigate the region.
Some extra spicy info
This is Rockstar games nothing is ever so simple.
Red Dead Redemption, of course, goes above and beyond with some extra details that make the game that little bit more authentic.
Horse’s testicles, for example, shrink in cold weather… that’s right.
Another cool feature that has been revealed shows that actions do have consequences.
Killed a random civilian? You could be hunted throughout the whole game by their family members, demanding retribution.
Talk about extra…
