There’s pushing the boundaries then there’s Agony – a game so controversial developers Madmind had to tone it down to get a PEGI rating.
Only very slightly it turns out.
As the name suggests, you play a tormented soul who finds their way into the depths of Hell without any memories about his past.

Played from a first-person perspective, you meander around the hellish landscape dodging demons all the while being treated to some of the most graphic imagery in video game history.
This includes (kids, look away now):
- Gore
- Brutal Sex Scenes
- Genital Physics
- Eye Gouging
- Heart Plucking
- Children Heads Exploding
- Setting Fire to Martyrs and Demons
- Intense Violence
- Strong Language
- Drugs
To help you along the way, you’ve got the ability to control other souls you bump into – think a sort of primitive possession.
Demons come in all shape and sizes, and as you progress you’ll be able to control bigger beasts in the blood-soaked romp.
Your way out of Hell comes in the form of the Red Queen – a terrifying monster with a Venus flytrap-like face.
Despite the censorship, Madmind had planned to release an ‘uncut’ version of the game. However, plans to do so have been thwarted due to unspecified ‘legal issues’.
Instead, the studio will to release a comparison video “so you will not miss out [on] anything,”.
“The censorship now affects only several seconds from two endings (out of seven) and some scenes that may be unlocked only after the end of the game,” Madmind wrote.
“None of the scenes you have seen in the trailers and other promotional materials have been censored at all, and the game will feature those on all platforms.”
Agony is out now on Xbox One, PS4 and PC.
You have been warned.
PS. To celebrate the launch of the game, the Agony team created a very special, if totally horrific-looking, cake – depicting the Red Queen.
The beautiful monstrosity was created by SugarSpiceCakes in Basingstoke and cost upwards of £1200.
The entire thing is edible, even the head, which was made out of a chocolate fudge type of mouldable chocolate.
