FIFA 18: Club hires pro FIFA player then fires him two days later

PSV sacked the star gamer after a string of dubious tweets were brought to the club's attention

More and more football clubs are hiring professional FIFA players to represent them on the eSports stage.

Sadly, it doesn’t always go to plan – as was the case with PSV’s latest addition to their pro gamer roster.

The Dutch football club unveiled Tony Kok just before the weekend in spectacular fashion. They even made a trailer.

But two days later his contract was ripped up after a string of dubious tweets posted a couple of years ago were brought to the club’s attention.

In a statement on their website, PSV claimed Kok and his management failed to share information about the youngster’s past online behaviour – which ultimately made continued collaboration is impossible.

Dutch site Omroep Brabant highlights one notable tweet, which reads ‘all farmers are gay’ – ‘farmers’ is the nickname for PSV fans.

Kok’s management told AD the tweets should be blamed on youth. The most recent one was posted in February 2013.

PSV said they are determined to continue with their eSports ambition and they’ll improve the vetting procedure for new recruits in the future.
