Far Cry 5 may seem far, far away but there’s still plenty to get excited about.
Set in the fictional Hope County, Montana, you play a sheriff’s deputy who’s tasked with ending a brutal regime spearheaded by a preacher called Joseph Seed.
Expect plenty of actions, bags of freedom and, best of all, an enormous map to explore.
We pick out the five things that could make Far Cry 5 far and away the best in the series – starting off with its graphics.
It looks divine
Far Cry 5 is powered by the Dunia engine – the same one behind the last few games.
But don’t let that put you off.
Just like FIFA 18‘s Frostbite engine, Dunia has been tweaked and refined to make Hope County come to life.
The result is an incredibly vibrant world, packed with intricate details.
Expect the Xbox One X and PC version to have the best graphics – closely followed by the PS4 Pro version.
If you’re looking to invest in a 4K TV, this game could help swing it.
Guns, lots of guns
As per the last game, you’re able to explore the massive map at will – but tread with caution. It’s teeming with baddies of all shapes and sizes.
Thankfully, you’ll have a range of weapons including such as shotguns, pistols, rocket launchers, bows, and explosives to help you survive.
The close quarters combat system has also had an overhaul, with a wider range of melee weapons – from pitch forks, sledgehammers and baseball bats – all able to be wielded.
Far Cry games have never been known their vehicles, but Ubisoft has ramped things up for Far Cry 5.
You’ll be able to traverse the map in muscle cars, all-terrain vehicles, boats and planes.
The latter is the one we’re most excited about as it suggests you’ll be able to parachute – not to mention take part in aerial dogfights.
The best thing about Far Cry: Primal was the buddy system. This allowed you to ‘train’ wildlife into unstoppable, loyal killing machines.
The good news is that this is returning in Far Cry 5- although there’ll be no Saber-toothed tigers this time around, sadly.
The only animal we’ve seen so far is a trusty dog, which can take down enemies, create distractions and retrieve weapons.
Different wildlife will have unique combat patterns, strengths and weaknesses – so you’ll have to pick the best beast for the job.
Twice as fun
Yep… for the first time in the series, you’ll be able to take on the campaign with a pal.
Co-op was obviously a huge part of another recent Ubisoft title, Ghost Recon: Wildlands. When tackling missions, one of you could snipe enemies from afar while another could get up close and personal.
However, Wildlands lacked a compelling narrative – something the Far Cry team has always delivered on. This should help give it the edge.
Oh, and you can create your own character, too – gender and appearance included, of course.
Far Cry 5 is released on February 27, 2018.
