FIVE-HORSE RACE

Who will finish this season as Dream Team’s best goalkeeper?

Roll up, roll up, place your bets!

The race to be Dream Team’s best goalkeeper this season is seemingly populated by five thoroughbred horses.

Let’s take a closer look at each one in an attempt to determine who is most likely to come out on top at the end of the campaign.

Alisson (£3.9m)

Bottom-placed side Burnley actually registered more shots on target than Liverpool at the weekend and the Reds needed their Brazilian stopper to be alert to ensure a narrow win in testing conditions.

Alisson scooped the Star Man award at Turf Moor and the 13-point haul meant he became the first asset in his position to pass 100 points in 2021/22.

The 29-year-old is certainly in contention to finish this season as Dream Team’s best keeper as Jurgen Klopp’s side remain active in the FA Cup and the Champions League, plus they are set to face Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final at the end of this month.

A high volume of potential fixtures means Alisson is well placed at this stage and as a historically reliable Dream Team asset, he is a low-risk option, though he’s the joint-second most expensive keeper at the time of writing.

Jose Sa (£3.5m)

Only Man City have conceded fewer goals than Wolves in the Premier League this season.

Their Portuguese custodian has racked up nine clean sheets in the league but, crucially, he’s avoided minus points brilliantly.

Sa has incurred negative points four times this season, twice against Brentford strangely, compared to Alisson’s seven occasions.

Bruno Lage’s side haven’t conceded more than one goal in a game since November 6th.

Sa has been among the top players in his position for a few weeks now but still his ownership remains staggeringly low, although perhaps Dream Team gaffers are conscious of the fact Wolves only have Premier League games left to fulfil this term.

Aaron Ramsdale (£3.9m)

Arsenal’s best performer this season

Arsenal’s new fan favourite averages 4.3 points-per-game which is more than of the other names on this list.

The England international has kept a clean sheet in 11 of his 19 league appearances this season – if he can maintain that record then finish with a very competitive tally.

Again, the Gunners only have league fixtures left in the schedule so Ramsdale may struggle to keep up with the his rivals at Man City, Chelsea and Liverpool but that was also true at the start of the season and he’s more than held his own since then.

No Arsenal player has more points at this stage.

Ederson (£4.0m)

Dream Team’s most-expensive keeper

Dream Team’s most-popular keeper by virtue of the fact he is first-choice for the team cruising toward another league title.

The Brazil international has missed just one league game and is currently leading the race for the Golden Glove with 14 clean sheets to his name – he’s also started every Champions League fixture this season as Man City desperately seek the one trophy that has evaded them under Pep Guardiola.

Ederson is a solid selection, certainly one for those leading their mini-leagues who don’t need to take big risks, but it’s worth noting he averages three points-per-game, the lowest of all the names on this list.

The 28-year-old is yet to claim a Star Man award this season whereas Sa has scooped five!

Edouard Mendy (£3.8m)

Chelsea’s No16 has to be in the conversation because not only is he the reigning king among keepers, he topped the rankings for weeks on end earlier this season.

Naturally he fell behind in Dream Team while he was busy winning the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal but he should resume first-team duties in the coming weeks, despite Kepa Arrizabalaga’s (£2.7m) impressive form.

The Blues have generally been dominant in terms of defensive returns under Thomas Tuchel and while their domestic form has wavered in recent weeks, Mendy’s record since joining Dream Team counts for a lot.
