Is Reece James now a must-have defender for the remainder of the season?

You would be forgiven for forgetting the actual football that took place on Tuesday night.

Chelsea and Brighton played out a 0-0 draw at Stamford Bridge amid news that the Super League was collapsing under the weight of its own greed.

Fans outside the stadium cheered as it was revealed Roman Abramovich was willing to turn his back on Florentino Perez, a move that was to be repeated by the other five English clubs who had signed up.

Now that episode is dying down, we can finally reflect on the goalless draw from a Dream Team perspective (the bigger issue in many ways).

DT SPECIAL: Jesse Lingard & Mason Mount both to score from outside the box this Saturday – 125/1!

One of the big winners of the current Game Week is Reece James (£5.0m).

The Blues’ rampaging right-back has leapfrogged John Stones (£5.1m) and Ruben Dias (£4.2m) to become the fourth-best defender Dream Team has to offer.

The 21-year-old banked nine points from the games against Man City and Brighton to take his overall tally to 171.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£4.4m) holds a narrow lead of just one point over his fellow right-back — James could find himself on the podium this time next week.

As you’ve probably figured out by now, you can’t go too wrong with any of the regular Chelsea defenders.

Ben Chilwell (£4.3m), Cesar Azpilicueta (£4.8m) and Kurt Zouma (£3.8m) are all top ten defenders too, with Antonio Rudiger (£4.4m) just six points off joining the gang.

It’s been a great season for Chelsea defenders

But James is the best of the lot right now and that’s notable considering his relative low ownership of 9.7%, which puts him outside the ten most-selected defenders.

In fact, no other player with an ownership below 10% has as many points as James.

Frequently deployed as a wing-back, he benefits from the Blues’ steady stream of clean sheets while simultaneously playing a key role in their attacking play.

Given the quality of his crossing, some might expect him to have more than five assists this season but Chelsea’s forwards haven’t been at their most clinical — let’s not discuss Timo Werner’s (£3.3m) xG performance.

James has 21 7+ ratings in all competitions, significantly more than Chilwell (14), indicating the generally positive impact he has on the majority of games in which he’s involved.

He won’t come cheap but he could might be a must-have defender for the remainder of the season.
