We have a machine among us.
It’s no secret that Virgil van Dijk has been an utter colossus for Liverpool all season.
The Dutchman deservedly picked up the PFA Player of the Year award on Sunday after some truly stellar performances.
But he has also notched a far more important accolade that many of you will be blissfully unaware of.
His eight points against Huddersfield on Friday night took his total to 253 for the season – a new record for a defender in a single Dream Team campaign.
The previous best tally for a defender was held by Daley Blind in 2015/16 with 251 points, and the then Manchester United man was playing in midfield for most of that season anyway.
Van Dijk is peerless and he has utterly revolutionised Liverpool’s defence since his £75m move from Southampton in January 2018.
The Reds boast the best defensive record in the division with just 20 goals conceded.
And Van Dijk has been a threat at the other end too, scoring five times and laying on two assists too.
He currently sits fifth in the overall rankings this season but is nearly a full 50 points clear of the next closest defender in Aymeric Laporte.
It’s hardly surprising that the Dutch machine is currently owned by 47.5% of Dream Team managers.
Last season Nicolas Otamendi was the leading defender with 222 points, but Van Dijk has made a mockery of that total.
And he isn’t finished yet either.
While the majority of clubs only have two games remaining, Liverpool have at least four to play… with a fifth in the pipeline too if they reach the Champions League final.
So can Van Dijk add even more points to his record? Or will Lionel Messi have his wicked way with him?
Van Dijk has played in every single Premier League game this season and only missed one Champions League tie through suspension too.
He might be indestructible after all.
