Some social media users were professing that Sergio Aguero had ‘lost it’ and his powers were fading.
So, as all world class strikers do, he made them hurriedly delete their tweets with a clinical finish to set Manchester City on their way to a win over Brighton on the opening weekend of the Premier League season.
City boss Pep Guardiola paired Aguero with Gabriel Jesus in attack and both were guilty of wasting chances before the Argentine’s goal halfway through the second half.
Lewis Dunk then turned into his own net under pressure from Jesus ten minutes later to hand the title favourites a deserved 2-0 win.
City’s ominous spending so far this summer – which has already exceeded £200m – means their bench boasted the likes of Leroy Sane, Raheem Sterling, Bernardo Silva and Yaya Toure.
But one of those who did start was the talk of the internet throughout the game.
